Beginner's Guide to Enamel Pins: Understanding the Basics

Ready to dive into the wonderful world of enamel pins? Let’s make this journey super fun and easy for you with our Beginner’s guide to enamel pins.  Pin badges have become a popular form of self-expression and a fantastic way to adorn jackets, bags, and more. If you’re new to the world of enamel pins, this beginner-friendly guide will help you understand the basics, from terminology to caring for your pin collection.

TERMINOLGY…

Base Metal:
Think of it as the pin’s backbone! Iron, Zinc Alloy, Aluminium, and Copper are the cool kids here. Iron rocks for simpler shapes, while Zinc Alloy steals the show for intricate designs.

Enamel:
This refers to the coloured material used to fill the recessed areas of the pin badge.  The enamel is baked hard in an oven.  Soft enamel and hard enamel are the two main types.

Soft Enamel: This has a sunken look with a raised metal border. Soft enamel generally has more colour options, with richer and more vibrant colours available
Hard Enamel: A smooth and polished enamel that is level with the metal often used because it is more durable and hard wearing.

Backstamp:
Leave your mark! It’s a logo or text on the back of your pin, shouting out to the world who made this awesome creation. Engraved or overprinted, it’s all about that personal touch.

Limited Edition:
Pins produced in a set quantity, making them more collectible and attractive.  By producing a limited quantity pin badge this then creates a sense of urgency and exclusivity that can drive sales!

Plate:
It’s like dressing up your pin, the metal coating. Common platings include gold, silver, nickel, and black nickel.

Backings:
These are like the security guards for your pin, keeping it snug on your clothing. Butterfly clutches, rubber clutches, and safety fixings are the popular gang here.

Choosing and Designing Enamel Pins…

Design:
Pick pins that resonate with your style or interests.  When creating your design keep wording to a minimum and simplify your design as much as possible.  Only use solid colours, so don’t use gradients.  Remember that the number of colours, complexity of your design and the overall size all influence the cost.

Quality:
Consider the materials used and the production process.  Soft enamel is a brilliant
product but hard enamel is the premium item!

Size:
Size matters, right? Pick a size that suits your style and where you want to show it off.  Around 25mm is a good starting point.  Anything with intricate design or lots of wording may require a larger pin.

Caring for Your Enamel Pins…

Give your pins some TLC!
Cleaning: Gently wipe your pins with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
Avoid Moisture: Keep your pins away from water to prevent damage to the metal and enamel.
Storage: Store your pins in a dedicated pin case or on a soft surface to prevent scratches.
Wear with Care: Avoid attaching pins to thick fabrics or repeatedly placing them in the same spot to prevent wear and tear.

Types of Enamel Pins…

Graphic Pins: Feature illustrations or designs. Get artsy with illustrations and design.
Text Pins: Primarily composed of text or typography. Say it loud and proud.
Glitter Pins: Include glitter elements for added flair.
Dangly Pins: Have additional hanging elements for extra movement.
